At first, please see the description of the beevelop/nginx-basic-auth repository. If you pass a RAW_CREDENTIALS=1 environment variable, you can specify the HTPASSWD in the raw form, e.g. HTPASSWD=foo:bar\nbaz:quux.

Full example:

docker run -d \
           -e HTPASSWD='foo:bar' \
           -e RAW_CREDENTIALS=1 \
           -e FORWARD_PORT=1337 \
           --link web:web -p 8080:80 \
           --name auth \
           pallly/nginx-basic-auth
